Odense: Mayor to speak at Friday prayers

The Danish People's Party Deputy Mayor Alex Ahrendtsen is considering whether his party can continue to support Mayor Jan Boye at the next election because Boye has agreed to speak at a mosque after Friday prayers.

"I'm astounded. I can't find words to explain why. I don't believe it," Ahrendtsen told TV2/FYN.

First

Ahrendtsen says that a mayor has no place at Friday prayers with the Association of the Islamic Faith.

There is no political agenda in connection with the meeting, but the mayor is due to speak to the congregation following Friday prayers and to take part in a closed meeting and dinner in the evening.

The visit to the Ørbækvej mosque in Odense is the first time that a senior politician has taken part in Friday prayers according to the Association of the Islamic Faith.

Thinking cap

"I haven't seen him pray in a church or Hindu or Buddhist temple. What is he trying to achieve. This is totally unacceptable for the Danish People's Party and we will have to consider whether we can continue to support him. We'll have to put on our thinking cap," says Ahrendtsen.
