Belgium: Turk beaten to death in prison

Tekins' family protested in front of the prison yesterday, and his parents asked to meet with the prison administration. They did not meet face-to-face, but spoke on the phone. Meanwhile the prison guards are returning to work. (HLN)

The autopsy report of Mikail Tekin, an ethnic Turkish prisoner in Belgium's Jamioulx Prison who lost his life last Saturday, lists his cause of death as “physical violence.”

The prison administration made a statement following the death of 31-year-old Tekin, who was detained on Aug. 7 as a result of a quarrel involving traffic police. While the prison administration announced the cause of death as “choking while eating,” other prisoners protested, claiming that he was subjected to torture while being transported to an isolation cell. Prosecutors stated that marks of violence had been detected on Tekin's body following the autopsy report and detained three guards. Prosecutors said the investigation into the case is continuing. Guards at Jamioulx Prison went on strike yesterday after their three coworkers were detained.
